The goal of the Department of Human Development (HDEV) is to study maturation and development as lifelong processes, integrating anthropology, biology, psychology, and sociology to provide students with an understanding of development in the context of family, society, and culture. Students learn about the biological, cognitive, social, and emotional development of humans from conception to death with a focus on equity and social justice, and faculty apply an interdisciplinary focus to both teaching and research. HDEV classes prepare students for rewarding careers in therapy, social work, counseling, health, education, advocacy, business, research, and more.

Why Choose Human Development Over Psychology or Other Majors?
A Holistic, Interdisciplinary Approach
- While Psychology focuses on individual behavior and mental processes, Human Development integrates psychology, sociology, anthropology, and biology to explore human growth across the lifespan.
- HDEV provides a more comprehensive view of human experiences—from infancy to aging—considering the influences of family, culture, and society.
More Applied and Hands-On Learning
- HDEV emphasizes real-world application through internships, service learning, and community-based research.
- You’ll gain practical experience working with children, families, older adults, and diverse communities—making you career-ready!
