The class begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance education, progresses to the basics of hands-on self-defense training, and culminates in a full defense simulation. A high level of fitness is not a requirement to participate, but dynamic physical simulations will take place on a voluntary basis.

Why is this course offered to women only?

Social programming means that oftentimes, women in our society are rarely taught to be assertive, vocal, or to defend themselves physically. It is vital that women feel empowered to stand up for themselves when necessary, because statistically speaking, women face a disproportionately high risk of violence, specifically sexual violence, so there is a disproportionately high need for women to learn self-defense techniques. On average, 1 in 3 women will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime, and ¼ women are sexually assaulted before the age of 18. In addition to teaching physical defensive techniques, R.A.D. also teaches awareness, prevention, and risk reduction strategies to hopefully minimize the likelihood of victimization in the first place.
