°µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency (LBTR)

The °µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency is a collaborative effort between °µÍøÊÓÆµ Unified School District (LBUSD) and California State University °µÍøÊÓÆµ (CSULB). Through a grant with LBUSD, students can earn up to $34,000 in financial support for a year of student teaching
 
Benefits of the °µÍøÊÓÆµ Residency include:
  • Accepted students become residents with LBUSD and student teach in LBUSD. 
  • Residents are paid a monthly stipend through LBUSD during their student teaching year. The stipend amount totals up to $34,000 for the school year.
  • In addition to the stipend, residents can work as substitute teachers one day a week for additional pay.
  • Upon successful completion of the program, residents receive priority interviews with LBUSD for available teaching vacancies. In return, residents agree to a teaching commitment of four years.
  • Methods courses are held off-campus in LBUSD.
  • Coursework is linked to real teaching in a real classroom, and space is reserved in every course.
  • LBTR residents receive additional professional development from °µÍøÊÓÆµuniversity faculty and LBUSD district leadership.
  • A cohort model allows Residents to form a community with other future teachers.
To be eligible for the °µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency, students must pursue a credential through one of the following pathways at CSULB:
 
UDCP: Pursue the dual credential in Educational Specialist (MMSN) and Multiple Subjects through UDCP. Students may join UDCP as ITEP or PostBac students. The °µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency Program will accept up to 25 UDCP candidates each year. UDCP is a two-year program. Candidates must successfully complete the first year of the program before student teaching in the second year of the program. Financial support is only available for the student teaching year of the program (year 2). The UDCP schedule allows candidates the option to work in year 1. UTEACH/BILA: Pursue the Spanish bilingual authorization (BILA) in addition to the Multiple Subject credential through the UTEACH program. The °µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency will accept up to 5 UTEACH-Spanish BILA candidates each year. UTEACH is a one-year program. Candidates must apply to UTEACH and be eligible for the Spanish BILA. Interested students must first apply to either UDCP or UTEACH pathways to be eligible. Both programs are recruiting now to start Fall 2026! Application deadline is June 1, 2026.

Requirements

Students accepted into the °µÍøÊÓÆµ Teacher Residency must:
  • Pursue either:
    • A Spanish bilingual authorization (BILA) in addition to the Multiple Subject credential through the UTEACH program
    • The Educational Specialist (MMSN) and Multiple Subject dual credential through UDCP. (Extensive Support Needs credentials not eligible for stipend.)
    • Students must first enroll in one of the credential programs above at CSULB.
  • Commit to a full year of student teaching, following the LBUSD school calendar.
  • Student teach in either a Dual Immersion (bilingual) classroom or a TK-3rd Grade Collaborative Co-Teaching (CCT) classroom within LBUSD.
  • Agree in writing to serve in a school within the jurisdiction of LBUSD for at least four school years, beginning with the school year following the successful completion and attainment of a preliminary teaching credential.
    • Residents not hired by LBUSD will be offered guidance on other job opportunities within or outside the district. (Four-school-year teaching commitment must be completed in a California school).
    • Residents will have eight school years to complete the four-school-year teaching commitment.

Through a strong partnership, this program recruits, prepares, and supports a diverse pipeline of multilingual, inclusive, and transformational teacher leaders. These educators are equipped to promote equity and justice within their schools and communities in order to be champions for students and families in the °µÍøÊÓÆµ Unified School District.
