Alison Kowalski

Alison Kowalski studies design in the United States from the late nineteenth century to present day, with emphasis on issues related to gender and class. She is especially interested in how products were made, how the people involved learned their skills, how the work was organized, and how the end results were portrayed in the media. These interests have led her to topics ranging from early design education to the manufacture of ostrich feathers to interior design in Life magazine. Her work has been published in the Journal of Design History, Textile History, Material Intelligence, and Hyperallergic as well as auction and exhibition catalogues. Currently, she is focused on design in Los Angeles during the early twentieth century.
